This morning I rode up the elevator with Scott McNealy. He looked out the elevator window as we rode up to the GM CIO's private floor and asked me about Ford Field and Tiger Stadium off in the distance. I thought about asking him something witty, like hows your golf game coming along, as he is ranked among the best of executive golfers.
Instead, I just played it cool and said welcome to Detroit. When he got off I asked the only other person in the elevator, do you know who that was? That was Scott McNealy. She looked at me quizzically for a minute then asked, who's that?
"He's the Chairman of Sun Microsystems, and he invented the Internet", I said. She paused for a minute of thought, "oh", then went back to her text messaging as I stepped off the elevator on to my floor.
It was a brief encounter with greatness, but inspiring none the less, and a great way to start off my work day. I'm not sure the elevator woman shared my enthusiasm. It's funny how people can sometimes share a common experience and have such different reactions.
Maybe she'll google his name and learn something today..
