Tuesday night new friend Chris scored free tickets to the Magic Stick theater downtown to see the Stills. The Magic Stick is a great venue for live music. Great vibe and a lot of music (and bowling) history in the building. The Stills put on a decent show with a lot of flamboyance in their stage set up and their playing. Their music sounded heavily influenced by the likes of a Joy Division or Echo & The Bunnymen. They also reminded reminded me of the Doves, with a song full of snare drum antics. Their style was heavily reminiscent of the 80's post punk scene.
Wikipedia says the Stills played to a crowd of almost 300k in Montreal earlier this year, which was in great contrast to this show, where they entertained a total of maybe fifty or so hearty souls who ventured out on this election night.
While they had a couple of songs that kept my attention, nothing really stood out, and there was a familiarity to their music I just couldn't get past. I wasn't sure if these guys were out ahead of the curve or if the future of music was looking at this band in the rear view mirror. Then again, who really knows where music is going next.
An enjoyable show overall with a new friend, I'd see them again in the right venue if they had something new to offer.
Oh yea, other notable events that happened on this evening, a new president was elected to great joy of the crowd.

Aw, man. I had no idea that the Stills were in town this week. I saw them a few years back and enjoyed their show. I picked up their newest CD and am really digging it.
I'm bummed.
Bri.
