Kite Camp

This past weekend, after many false starts and much anticipation, I travelled to East Tawas for a weekend long Kiteboard camp.

The weather outlook was not looking good for the weekend, but it was already late June and I had not accomplished one of my major goals for the summer, learn to kiteboard. Work has been an enormous distraction this spring, and the few weekends I had free, the weather did not agree.

The camp was an enjoyable experience overall, but significantly shorter than planned. By Saturday afternoon I was up on the board riding with a small 9 meter sail, but the wind quickly dissipated, and left me wanting more by the end of the day.

Sunday started out with hope, we assembled the kites and walked out to the sandbar with three kites in the air. Shortly thereafter, the wind died, and we called it a day before it really even began. Massive Cu's were rollin in, and a big summer storm was clearly going to hit.

Overall, I met some great guys, and found a phenomenal place to kiteboard and waste away summer weekends on the beach. I just wish I would have received more than four hours of training in total for a weekend kiteboard camp.

I'm in the final stages of deciding if I wish to pursue this sport further. Between investment in gear and the relative distances to good kiteboarding locations, I'm thinking it though thoroughly. I have an opportunity to spend all next week on the beach during GM shutdown learning the sport, but of course the weather outlook looks poor, so I'm waiting until the last minute to see how things shape up.
