Drifter

Today we got the first big winter dump with over 12" recorded.

This morning I quickly assessed the road conditions and determined that I would not be driving into work, however it would serve as the first good opportunity to explore the 'real world' lateral adhesion limits of the Subies WRC influenced AWD system.

I was so pleased to find that the car just tracks through a foot of snow without any trouble, even with a lousy all season Bridgestone.

I made my way to the local winter driving conditions test track, which in my case is an unfinished subdivision with nice wide streets and (almost) no (visible) obstructions. After about twenty minutes of drifting the abandoned roads, I had a giant smile on my face and a good level of confidence in driving near the control limits of the car. Nothing like having to run the wipers on high 'cause your kicking up a ten foot wall of fresh pow off the front tyres!

Plenty of fun, and lots of learning with regard to piloting the WRX through a high speed controlled slide. Without a doubt, this is the 'funnest' car I have ever owned. It's just so versatile, and capable in all conditions, yet it serves as a stealthy 25 mpg econobox commutermobile for my daily 100 mile grind.

Overall driving impressions in heavy snow..

When in doubt, GAS IT.
